On the 2nd of November 2008 Team Vegan members participated in what was probably one of the most gruelling events we have done yet - the Adidas Auckland Marathon.
Team Vegan entered a team of eight: Rosemary Soryl and Mel Sharman in the marathon, Aaron Koolen, Michael Bourke, David Tong & Polly Sharman in the half marathon, and Nichola Jones & Elliot Pryor ran the quarter marathon event. Well done everyone. For many it was the first time they had ever gone these distances, a fabulous day and great achievement for all!
Afterwards the team went for a celebratory lunch at Mexicali. See our gallery for more action photos from the day.

On June 1st 2008 two of our Christchurch members, Flip Grater and Mariann Matay, lined up alongside over 4,500 other participants registered for the SBS Marathon.
Flip entered the half marathon event and Mariann the 10km. This was Flip's first half marathon, and all that training definitely paid off.
Flip says it was great to come “bowling into the finishing chute past collapsing peers and hundreds of cheering crowd members with a wide smile on my face and my Team Vegan t-shirt worn proudly.”
Thanks to supporters on the day who turned up to cheer the pair along with encouragement from the sidelines.
Also nice to hear the team tops got such good compliments.
Well done Mariann and Flip!

Team Vegan at the Devonport Classic |

Six Team Vegan members participated in the Devonport Classic fun run on Sunday 6th April. Peter Sankoff, Graeme Mullholland and Jiarn Cornwell ran the 5km; and Nichola Jones, Aaron Koolen and Deidre Bourke did the 10km event. Unfortunately our seventh member, Amanda, had to pull out at the last minute due to sickness.
The Devonport Classic is a great little community fun run, with several thousand people participating. The run was much tougher than expected (perhaps we should have done more research!). The 10km course traversed a range of terrains - lots of hills, paddocks and even a good long stretch of running on sand down the beach at Narrow Neck Bay. The largest hill was the volcanic cone of North Head, which seemed to go up and up forever. On the up side, it was a chance to catch the many other participants who resorted to walking at that point!
Aaron, Deidre and Nichola are all training for their first half marathon in November (with Team Vegan of course) so this run made a good medium distance run as part of their training schedule.
Lots of spot prizes and awards were given out - for fastest finishers as well as best hat and costumes. Wouldn't you know it, Amanda won a spot prize, but they wouldn't allow it to be collected as she didn't do the run. You would have won a reflexology session Amanda! Next time!

Team Vegan does Bike The Bays |
|
Sunday, 30 March 2008 15:31 |
Six Team Vegan members braved the crowds and risked life and limb to participate in the annual Bike The Bays fun ride in Auckland. Starting at Orakei Reserve the ride went toward the city, turned at Mechanics bay and then went back out to St Heliers where it went up Cliff road and down again, back to Orakei Reserve. Those doing the 20km versions (4 of us) stopped there while the 40km participants did another loop!
Weather was great, atmosphere was friendly and we all got home safely without any prangs, which is more than I can say for a number of participants.
Check photos from the day in the gallery!

Round The Bays 2008 Run Day! |
|
|
|
|
Sunday, 16 March 2008 15:10 |

Today 24 Team Vegan members ran the annual 'Auckland Round the Bays fun run and walk' (along with 70,000 or so others!) A great day for it and an amazing experience, not just to run as a team for the first time, but to run in such a huge community event - it is virtually impossible to run the entire event with such a massive crowd gathered behind the start line (which stretched back for ages), and quite a sensation when everyone starts to move.
Sixteen of us started as a big group altogether (photo above), while another speedier group headed right to the front for a fast start.
The team tops worked great - in fact even walking to our assembly point before the run, we had someone come up to us saying 'wow are you vegans - I've been vegan for 31 years I didn't know there was a team', so we may have gotten a new recruit before we even started! But we definitely also need some branding on our backs, which would be especially good when passing the teams running for meat and dairy companies! (Which there were lots of - especially from Fonterra).
No official times are available yet, but fastest was the teams trainer Michael Bourke who ran the 8.4 km in around 36 minutes.
Great day, and great stuff everyone!!
